How to Change the Sand in a Hayward Filter

Regular maintenance is crucial for the proper functioning of a Hayward pool filter. One of the most important aspects of maintenance is changing the sand in the filter. Hayward filters are designed to use sand as a medium to trap dirt and debris, but over time, the sand can become compacted and less effective. In this article, we will guide you through the process of how to change the sand in a Hayward filter, ensuring your pool stays clean and your equipment performs optimally.

Before you begin, it is essential to gather all the necessary tools and materials. You will need a bucket, a garden hose, a flat-head screwdriver, a socket set, a wrench, and a new bag of sand. It is also recommended to have a helper present to assist you with the process.

Step 1: Turn Off the Power Supply

Before you start working on the Hayward filter, ensure that the power supply is turned off. This is to prevent any accidents or damage to the equipment. Locate the circuit breaker or disconnect switch for your pool pump and turn it off.

Step 2: Drain the Existing Sand

With the power supply turned off, locate the drain plug at the bottom of the Hayward filter. Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the plug and allow the existing sand to drain out. Place a bucket underneath the drain plug to collect the sand.

Step 3: Remove the Sand Lid

After the sand has drained out, locate the sand lid on top of the Hayward filter. Use a socket set and wrench to remove the bolts holding the lid in place. Once the bolts are loose, gently lift the lid off the filter.

Step 4: Remove the Old Sand

With the lid removed, you can now access the sand bed inside the Hayward filter. Use your hands to carefully remove the old sand from the filter. Be sure to keep the sand in a separate container for reuse.

Step 5: Clean the Sand Bed

Step 6: Add New Sand

With the sand bed clean, it’s time to add the new sand. Begin by spreading a layer of sand on the bottom of the filter, ensuring that it covers the entire surface. Then, gradually add more sand, layer by layer, until the bed is approximately 12 inches deep. Remember to spread the sand evenly to ensure proper filtration.

Step 7: Reinstall the Lid and Drain Plug

Once the new sand has been added, replace the sand lid on the Hayward filter. Secure the lid using the bolts and socket set. Next, reinstall the drain plug and tighten it securely.

Step 8: Restart the Pool Pump

With the Hayward filter now equipped with new sand, you can turn the power supply back on and restart the pool pump. The filter will begin to clean the pool water, ensuring that it remains crystal clear.

By following these steps, you can successfully change the sand in a Hayward filter and maintain your pool’s cleanliness. Regular maintenance will help extend the life of your pool equipment and keep your pool enjoyable for years to come.
