How to Sew a Pocket by Hand

Embroidering a pocket by hand is a classic skill that can add a personal touch to any garment. Whether you’re making a vintage-inspired dress or customizing a pair of jeans, adding a hand-sewn pocket can elevate the look and functionality of your project. In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of sewing a pocket by hand, step by step.

Materials Needed

Before you begin, gather the following materials:

– Fabric: Choose a fabric that matches or complements the garment you’re working on.
– Thread: Select a thread color that matches your fabric.
– Scissors: A pair of sharp fabric scissors for cutting.
– Pins: A few pins to hold the fabric in place.
– Measuring tape: To measure the pocket size.
– Seam ripper: In case you need to make any adjustments.

Step 1: Cut the Fabric

First, cut out two pieces of fabric for the pocket. The size will depend on your design, but a common size is approximately 6 inches by 8 inches. You can also draw a template on paper if you need a specific shape or size.

Step 2: Hem the Pocket Edges

To prevent the edges of the pocket from fraying, fold the top and bottom edges of the fabric over 1/4 inch and press with an iron. Then, fold them over another 1/4 inch and press again. Pin the hems in place and sew along the edges using a whipstitch or a blind hem stitch.

Step 3: Create the Pocket Opening

Fold the pocket in half lengthwise with the right sides facing each other. Pin the edges together and sew along the sides, leaving a 1-inch opening at the top for turning the pocket right side out. Backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam to secure it.

Step 4: Turn the Pocket Right Side Out

Using a toothpick or a pointy object, carefully push the pocket right side out through the opening. Press the edges with an iron to create a crisp finish.

Step 5: Attach the Pocket to the Garment

Position the pocket on the garment where you want it to be sewn. Pin the pocket in place, making sure the edges are aligned with the garment’s edges. You can also mark the pocket placement with a fabric pen if desired.

Step 6: Sew the Pocket to the Garment

Using a whipstitch or a blind hem stitch, sew the pocket to the garment. Start from the bottom edge of the pocket and work your way up to the top edge. Be sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam to secure it.

Step 7: Close the Opening

Once the pocket is securely attached, carefully hand-sew the opening closed using a whipstitch or a blind hem stitch.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully sewn a pocket by hand. This skill can be used to add pockets to various garments and projects, allowing you to customize your clothing and create unique pieces. Happy sewing!
