How to Make Your Own Pocket Tee
Embarking on a DIY project can be both rewarding and fun, especially when it comes to crafting your own clothing. One such project that has gained popularity in recent years is making your own pocket tee. Not only does it allow you to express your personal style, but it also gives you the opportunity to customize the design to your liking. In this article, we will guide you through the process of creating your very own pocket tee, from selecting the fabric to adding the pocket and finishing touches.
Selecting the Fabric
The first step in making your own pocket tee is to choose the fabric. Since pocket tees are typically casual and comfortable, cotton or a cotton blend is a popular choice. You can also opt for a more luxurious fabric like jersey or bamboo, depending on your preference. When selecting the fabric, consider the following:
– Fabric type: Cotton, jersey, or bamboo.
– Color: Choose a color that complements your style or the occasion.
– Pattern: Solid colors are the most straightforward, but you can also find patterns that add visual interest.
Measuring and Cutting the Fabric
Once you have chosen your fabric, it’s time to measure and cut it. To make a standard-sized pocket tee, you will need approximately 2 yards of fabric. Use a ruler and a pair of fabric scissors to cut the fabric according to the following measurements:
– Front panel: 22 inches wide by 28 inches long
– Back panel: 22 inches wide by 30 inches long
– Sleeves: 2 pieces, each 22 inches wide by 20 inches long
Assembling the Pocket Tee
Now that you have your fabric cut, it’s time to assemble the pocket tee. Follow these steps:
1. Place the front and back panels right sides together and pin them along the sides and shoulders.
2. Sew the sides and shoulders, leaving the neck opening open.
3. Turn the pocket tee right side out and press the seams.
4. Fold the bottom edge of the pocket tee up 1 inch and press. Then, fold it up another 1 inch and press again. Pin the hem in place.
5. Topstitch the hem to secure it.
Adding the Pocket
Now it’s time to add the pocket to your pocket tee. Here’s how to do it:
1. Cut a piece of fabric for the pocket, approximately 8 inches wide by 5 inches long.
2. Fold the pocket in half lengthwise with the right sides together and sew the side seams.
3. Turn the pocket right side out and press.
4. Pin the pocket to the front panel of the pocket tee, centered on the bottom edge. Make sure the pocket is positioned so that the top edge of the pocket is 1 inch below the bottom edge of the pocket tee.
5. Sew the pocket to the pocket tee, leaving a small opening for turning.
Finishing Touches
With the pocket securely attached, it’s time to add the final touches to your pocket tee:
1. Turn the pocket tee right side out through the opening you left for turning.
2. Press the pocket flat and sew the opening closed.
3. Topstitch the pocket and the hem to give your pocket tee a polished look.
