Whether you prefer a meaty lasagna or a vegetarian version, the possibilities are endless. In this article, we will guide you through the steps to prepare a mouthwatering lasagna from scratch.

Ingredients

Before you begin, gather the following ingredients:

– 1 pound (450g) lasagna noodles
– 2 tablespoons olive oil
– 1 pound (450g) ground beef or ground turkey (optional for a vegetarian version)
– 1 large onion, finely chopped
– 2 cloves of garlic, minced
– 2 cups (480ml) marinara sauce
– 1 can (28 oz/794g) crushed tomatoes
– 1 teaspoon dried oregano
– 1 teaspoon dried basil
– Salt and pepper, to taste
– 1 cup (240ml) ricotta cheese
– 2 cups (480ml) shredded mozzarella cheese
– 1 cup (240ml) shredded Parmesan cheese
– Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Preparation

1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

2. Cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

3. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. If using ground beef or turkey, add the meat and cook until browned. Drain and set aside.

4. In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and cook until translucent. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.

5. Stir in the marinara sauce, crushed tomatoes, oregano, and basil. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for about 10 minutes.

6. In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, 1 cup of mozzarella cheese, and 1/2 cup of Parmesan cheese. Mix well.

7. Spread a thin layer of sauce at the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish. Arrange a layer of cooked lasagna noodles over the sauce.

8. Spread a layer of the ricotta mixture over the noodles. Then, add a layer of the meat sauce, followed by a layer of mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.

9. Repeat the layers, finishing with a layer of mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top.

10. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.

11. Let the lasagna rest for about 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.

Enjoy your homemade lasagna with a side of garlic bread or a green salad for a complete meal. Buon appetito!
